Fabric-Fashion Design Scholarship Opportunity
Lisa’s future goals include wanting to open up an interior design shop, joining the Red Cross to alleviate the AIDS crisis, traveling the world and learning to crotchet. Although she has been sewing since she was in 8th grade, she has many interests related to design. She makes Kumohimo braids. This is a technique in which one turns cardboard disks clockwise as thread or yarn is pulled through the hole in the middle of the disk, all the while moving thread to different parts of the disk. Once the braid is complete, she uses them as embellishments for garments. Marcia Richards and Linda Bergmann, members of the Scholarship committee, attended the Elk Grove Community Foundation Dinner on May 7, 2009, where they met and had dinner with Lisa. We would like to congratulate Lisa on receiving our second annual scholarship and wish her well the future. The Elk Grove Community Foundation is the administrator for our scholarship. The application process starts early in the year; the students have to apply by February in order to be considered for a scholarship. The foundation notifies us when to come and review the applications. Once we pick our top two candidates, the foundation makes the final decision. Donors and Recipients are invited to attend the Elk Grove Foundation’s annual “Spotlight on Excellence” awards dinner where the scholarships are presented. We encourage all high school seniors who are planning on receiving more education after high school to apply for our scholarship. Check back at the beginning of 2010. The Elk Grove Community Foundation administers the scholarship, which is available for Elk Grove students planning to attend a trade school, four-year university or college, or community college after high-school graduation.
